Sheriff Synthetics of Key Largo has become certified in GLEE’s Green Business Program. A certified Amsoil dealership operated by Jeff and Rosie Sheriff, the owners have always maintained a small carbon footprint while doing business in a 120-square-foot home office.
In the Sheriff household, recycling is a way of life and energy conservation is a priority. In 2006, energy costs in the Sheriff household increased by 42 percent. Installing CFLs and investing in an Energy Star rated AC system are two of many steps the Sheriffs have taken to conserve energy.
By downloading his energy bill history dating back to 2003 (available to all Florida Keys Electric Cooperative customers on the FKEC.com website), Jeff confirmed the energy savings the family began to enjoy in 2007, when they first became serious about energy conservation. In 2009, the Sheriff’s average energy bill was less than the average bill in 2003, a considerable savings.
The Sheriff’s conservation habits extend to their business operation, which provides a synthetic alternative to petrochemical-based engine oil. Jeff says they recycle and reuse the plastic product bags and the cardboard boxes they use for shipping. The business uses recycled paper in the office and they recycle their printer and toner cartridges through the mail.
The Sheriffs are proud to work in a business that contributes to pollutant source reduction by offering 100% synthetic motor oils that do not have to be changed as often as conventional petroleum motor oil. According to the company website, used motor oil is the largest single source of oil pollution in our nation's waterways and when it’s not disposed of properly “oil seeps through landfills into ground water, disrupts bacterial digestion in sewer treatment plants and washes into lakes and harbors.”
