FKEC Becomes GBP Certified

Florida Keys Electric Cooperative (FKEC) continues to lead the Keys in sustainable practices by becoming certified in GLEE’s Green Business Program.

The FKEC Operation Center in Tavernier was recently certified by GLEE following an on-site assessment of the 62,000-square-foot, poured concrete facility. Meeting all program requirements, including waste reduction and conservation practices by employees, the new facility also sets a standard for sustainable construction.

Among the energy efficient features are a 30,000-gallon cistern for watering landscape and washing the FKEC fleet of more than 100 vehicles. All rainwater from the roof is channeled into the cistern along with most condensation from air-cooling systems. The facility uses high-efficiency chillers in lieu of standard central air-conditioning, and a reflective white roof membrane reduces heat absorption and curbs cooling expenses. Louvered red "eyebrow" overhangs allow natural light through windows while keeping direct sunlight out, and a solar-assisted water heating system.

Coral rock mined from the site was reused to create a unique front facade for the building and a partial fence structure. Recycled building materials, energy-saving cross-ventilation designs, dual flush toilets, and waterless urinals have all been incorporated into the new facility. A master lighting system turns building lights off at night and on in the morning, reducing energy consumption.

In addition to the green elements of the facility, staff at the center recycle cardboard, cans, plastic and paper, and reuse any other material that can be repurposed. The FKEC was the first fleet operator in the Keys to use biodiesel and now uses synthetic oil to reduce maintenance costs and lessen impact on the environment.

On March 13, FKEC walked away with GLEE’s Third Annual Green Living Award for agencies and received the Green Ambassador Award for the third year in a row. FKEC staff has worked closely with GLEE as founding members of the organization and continues to contribute to efforts to create a sustainable Florida Keys.
