First State Bank is GBP Certified
First State Bank of the Florida Keys has completed the GLEE Green Business Certification process for the FSB Whitehead Street branch in Key West.
Located at 444 Whitehead St. in an historic two-story structure, the branch uses CFL bulbs for interior and exterior lighting. To reduce cooling costs, window tinting and weather stripping has been applied, and ceiling fans used when needed. FSB has energy audits conducted annually, which helps to identify opportunities for conservation. At this location, an awning will be placed above the outdoor HVAC system to create shade and increase energy efficiency.
Recycling was first implemented by Green Teams at each FSB branch in (Year?) . The bank also distributes reusable shopping bags to customers. At the Whitehead St. branch, staff composts their coffee grounds by depositing in the surrounding landscape. Recycling and reuse of printer and toner cartridges is standard practice at FSB, and central purchasing practices support the recycled paper market with an estimated 66 percent recycled content on items such as notebooks, printer paper, folders, kitchen and bathroom paper products.
Water usage at the branch is minimal with no public restrooms or kitchen. A low-flow toilet for employees meets conservation standards, while an automatic watering system for the lawn will be reevaluated for need and efficiency. Because a storm sewer drain is located in front of the bank branch, use of fertilizer will be eliminated to reduce risk of near-shore water pollution.
In March, FSB received the 3rd Annual Green Business Ambassador Award for the many sustainable practices adopted by the institution Keys-wide at each facility. In addition to green practices, the bank is a frequent sponsor of green education events, where FSB staff assist as volunteers.
