| Coral Shores High School Art Class | The creative or "right side" of the brain definitely worked wonders with the Altered Book assignment in ART class. The students who participated were enthusiastic, worked hard and met the criteria for the project. Reusing old things, discarded objects to create beautiful books as gifts from the heart was a successful way to learn that old objects could be used to bring happiness to a friend or loved one in a very creative way. . The project was fun and educational. The art teachers are serving as role models to reduce waste reuse products through creative art and share these ideas with their students. |
| Dolphin Research Center | Through education, research and rescue, Dolphin Research Center promotes peaceful coexistence, cooperation and communication between marine mammals, humans and the environment we share with the well being of DRCís animals taking precedence. Teaching about conservation and practicing what we preach is a huge part of creating and sustaining that peaceful coexistence. If we don't care about the Earth then we cannot protect and care for all that live within it. |
| EcoAdapt | EcoAdapt is at the center of climate change adaptation innovation. We bring together diverse players in the conservation, policy, science, and development communities to reshape conservation and development in response to rapid climate change. Our main objectives are to: 1. Build the field of Adaptation: Catalyze creative thinking and dialog to develop this new conservation paradigm as a coherent and definable field of study and action, while coordinating, magnifying, and making accessible existing climate change adaptation capacity and resources; 2. Build capacity of current and future professionals in key areas such as conservation, planning, and development so they can engage in climate change adaptation thinking and implementation; 3. Support implementation of adaptation strategies by providing capacity to partners eager to take climate adaptation action. |
| Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority | As the steward of the potable water supply for the Florida Keys, the FKAA recognizes that it is a critical partner in the sustainability of these special islands. Our new reverse osmosis plant in Florida City draws water from the brackish Floridan Aquifer to help preserve and protect the fragile Everglades. The FKAA's progressive Strategic Plan, established by its Board of Directors, affirms the agency's role in environmental stewardship. Our remote-read advanced metering infrastructure project, water modeling program to maximize pipeline operation efficiency, high efficiency toilet rebate grants, and expanded fleet hybrid vehicle program are just a glimpse of FKAA embrace of sustainability. We participate in GLEE, KSAP, conservation incentive programs and grants, and extensive public outreach as well as supporting the day to day activities of the dedicated FKAA employees to make the 4R's come to life in our facilities. |
| Florida Keys Community College | Florida Keys Community College boasts its island environment and location in the center of a National Marine Sanctuary with America's only living coral reef in its backyard. These natural resources position the college to be able to offer unique programs that set FKCC apart from other colleges in the nation. The faculty, staff and students desire to protect these resources, and whenever possible, enhance them. FKCC's Marine Science department, in particular, has taken on several green initiatives including: development of alternative energy including tidal and wave hydrokinetic power and biofuels; coral reef mapping, assessment, and restoration; monitoring the Vandenberg's artificial reef; and shark repellent research to preserve shark populations and increase efficiency in the fishing industry. The student Environmental Club has been dedicated to promoting green practices to their peers and throughout the community. Notably, they have collected approximately 1,200lbs in trash and recyclables in clean-up events throughout the community in the Fall 2009 semester alone. |
| Florida Keys Electric Cooperative | As a member-owned, not-for-profit electric utility, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative is proud to be a local "green" leader. In 2009, FKEC developed "Simple Solar," an innovative program that allows locals to lease FKEC's solar panels and in return receive bill credits for the solar energy they produce. The leases will fund future renewable energy projects in the Keys. Also in 2009, FKEC earned national recognition as a "Tree Line USA Utility" from the Arbor Day Foundation and opened its new Tavernier Operations Center designed using LEEDs guidelines and featuring a 30,000 gallon cistern, solar-assist hot water and more. In 2008, FKEC installed the first grid-connected solar array in the Keys which was also Florida's second largest array. In 2007, FKEC was the first fleet operator in the Keys to switch to biodiesel fuel and the first utility to welcome interconnected solar homes. FKEC is also a founding member of GLEE and an original member and first host of KSAP. FKEC is now busy planning more "firsts" in renewable energy for the future of the Florida Keys. |
| Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition |
The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition is the only agency in the Keys that exists to promote optimal health for pregnant women and babies. Our mission is to give every baby the healthy start he or she deserves. Healthy living habits and care for the environment are central to this mission. We help clients save money and live green by promoting breastfeeding, organic and nutritious food habits, eco friendly diapering, and passing along second hand items. We promote green parenting and GLEE in presentations, publications and on our website. In our small office we strive to have a light environmental footprint through carpooling, bicycling, using energy efficient appliances, printing and copying double sided on recycled paper, scanning and emailing whenever possible, recycling, using reusable food containers, reusing scrap paper and envelopes, and reducing junk mail. We are always searching for additional ways to go green. |

| Girl Scout Troop 618 | Girl Scout Troop 618 decided in 2009 to make learning about and helping our environment one of the main focuses of our Community Service Work. The introduction to the Girl Scout Eco-Action Badge says "Eco -Action means doing things for the environment that will help people, animals, and plants stay healthy and the air, soil, and water stay clean". In taking action for this, many of the girls volunteered to be trained for GLEE's Recycling Education Project to educate others about Key West's recycling program. They also worked to help Key West offset it's carbon footprint by plotting areas around the city for tree planting. We held a fun event to teach other kids that recycling doesn't only mean "what you put into a bin", educating them about Reduce and Reuse. One of our Girl Scout sayings is, "Always leave a place cleaner than you found it!". Our girls are discovering, connecting and taking action to prepare today to become stewards of our Planet Earth tomorrow! |
| Habitat for Humanity of Key West & Lower FL Keys | Habitat for Humanity of Key West & Lower FL Keys is devoted to making a positive impact on our local environment. In striving to set a good environmental example, we have made all our events "green," with bio-degradeable and recycled paper products. We have built our new homes and done our renovations with a responsibility to preserving and conserving whenever and wherever possible. Making good conservation decisions goes hand in hand with being good stewards of our supporters' contributions - "waste not, want not." |
| Keys Energy Services | As the public power utility for Key West and the Lower Florida Keys, KEYS has long been growing GREEN initiatives for quite some time. While the aforementioned actions are new, long standing noteworthy programs include KEYS' nationally recognized annual Tree Giveaway, free on-site or online home energy surveys, and KEYS' award-winning Energy Conservation calendar. These programs have long been pillars of KEYS' GREEN efforts and continue to play important roles as lasting environmental changes are sought and new actions take their place beside them. |
| Keys to Peace | Keys to Peace is a grass roots organization of citizens committed to co-creating a more compassionate, peaceable & sustainable Florida Keys community. Through our local Peace Academy, we support the concept of a cabinet level U.S. Department of Peace and a National Peace Academy which would address the root causes of violence. Some of the solutions include supporting restorative justice, mediation, conflict resolution, peace education, bullying and gang prevention, etc. We believe these are the Keys to a Sustainable Future, as we learn and understand the complex relationship between the individual and community actions and its affect on the health of the planet. We challenge our neighbors to grow with us as we build awareness of peace through education, outreach, community activities. We are all the Keys to Peace! |
| Last Stand (Protect Key West & the Florida Keys, Inc) | Last Stand's purpose is to research, educate and take action to protect the quality of life and environment of the Florida Keys. Efforts to preserve the natural habitat of the Keys have resulted in the tier system preventing development on sensitive areas, preservation of the Key West salt ponds and establishment of nature preserves on Atlantic Avenue in Key West. Our education programs have promoted water quality improvements and environmental awareness among Key West High School students. Last Stand has supported several GLEE events and was cosponsor of Eric Lombardi's workshop for Key West City Commission on Building a Ten Year Bridge to Zero Waste. Our most valuable role may be as watchdog to development plans and legislation where we speak out in support of green and sustainable development and habitat preservation. We are honored to have been nominated by GLEE for the Green Living Awards. |
| Mariners Hospital - Baptist Health South Florida | Green living and sustainability is a top priority for Mariners Hospital and Baptist Health South Florida. | Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens | MARC is proud of our accomplishment in 2009 of being certified as a Green Business through GLEE. We've made some significant changes to think "Green," and have passed this on to our fellow staff, clients, and patrons. We've created an environment to promote sustainable actions through waste reduction, efficient energy, and the conservation of water and land resources. |
| Monroe County School District | As PKS students assert, green strategies are important because a good planet is hard to find. In MCSD, students are leading the way to change school culture. Over the past few years, they have prompted adults, including administrators, to make changes that have district wide impact. Students are doing the legwork when it comes to R-4 strategies. Students are encouraging community partners to get involved in the process. Students are engineering the future at KWHS's Alternative Energy Center, set to expand soon. Students are bringing these ideas home, expanding their influence exponentially. Green school strategies are facilitated by involved faculty who know kids learn by doing, and by administrators who ensure kids have the information and materials they need to be successful. |

| Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys | Mission Statement: Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys supports the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in the preservation, restoration, and sustainable use of our coral reef and marine ecosystems. We focus on development of community support and advancement of public awareness, education, outreach and scientific research. * SFFFK desires a society who understands the ocean and its needs and limitations. We need to develop an ìocean ethic,î much like ìland ethicî. With the intent to create a nation where the literacy of the people about the ocean and ocean issues is such that it affects their ethical understanding and behavior and is passed along, from generation to generation. Where a set of moral principals or values regarding the ocean and its inhabitantsí are instilled in people. The FKEI is designed with these goals. And for the purpose of not only reaching the communities of the Florida Keys, but also to reach far inland where some of the problems that affect the health of the ocean begin. |
| Unity of the Keys Spiritual Center | By voting to purchase a used building and renovating in the greenest methods possible, the members of Unity of the Keys made a major decision to be green. This major decision meant using less materials than a new build. On a daily and weekly basis, we recycle, reduce and reuse in the spirit of being green. We even repurposed the original steeple to become the base of our Unity Dove sculpture! |
