Florida Designated Clean Marinas
Mission:
To encourage "Keys-Friendly" boating practices, cleaning products, propulsion systems, sewage disposal, fuel control, and hurricane preparation. To involve municipalities, agencies, businesses and consumers in promoting and utilizing the State of Florida’s Clean Marina program.
Why Clean Boating:
Typical hazardous wastes generated by boaters include solvent paint waste, used batteries, mercury containing bilge pump switches, used oil, old gasoline and out of date . These materials not only degrade Florida’s environment, but also hamper the enjoyment of Florida’s recreational areas. Government alone cannot protect Florida’s sensitive environment. Each of us must share the responsibility for pollution prevention.
Clean Boating Successes:
- Florida’s Clean Marina Program: A partnership of Florida’s marinas, boatyards, retailers, boaters and government, the aim of the Clean Marina Program (CMP) is pollution prevention. The designation lets boaters know which businesses adhere to - or exceed "Florida Friendly" criteria and best management practices. There are currently 13 Clean Marinas and Boatyards in the Florida Keys!
- Clean Boaters Handbook and Pledge: A great guide for knowledge, the Clean Boaters Handbook gives everyday tips that you can use to lighten your load on our waters. Fill out the Pledge and you’ll get a Clean Boater free sticker.
Clean Boating Goals:
For now, GLEE wants to focus on citizen education, promoting existing Clean Marinas and encouraging more marinas/boatyards to join.
What You Can Do:
No one can change the world in a day. Pick one of the following items to work on each month:
- Visit a Clean Marina or Clean Boatyard.
- Ask your favorite marina to join.
- Keep Florida’s waters free of trash
- Practice Proper Fueling
- Recycle when possible
- Use pumpout facilities
- Help prevent the spread of exotics
- Take the Clean Boater Pledge.
- Join the Clean Boating Committee!
