GLEE’s Main Points:

  • The Florida Keys are on a fixed water withdrawal and have to create our own if we need more. When water demand doesn’t match supply, the reverse osmosis machines turn on, hiking our water costs.
  • The cheapest gallon of water is the gallon we don’t waste. Current building codes still use 1998 standards of water efficiency technologies. Other municipalities have shown that changing the efficiency of what we use is the easiest step towards reducing water use.
  • Sewer bills are determined by water usage. If an individual or business reduces water use, they reduce their water and sewer bills. If as a community, we reduce our water use, we reduce the size of sewage plant needed.
  • Power is needed to pump water from our aquifer, treat it for drinking, distribute it, use it and treat it for disposal. If we reduce our potable water usage, we reduce our collective carbon footprint.
